Understanding Payment Processing Fees

When you accept online payments through Stripe, there are processing fees to understand. Here's what you need to know.

Stripe Processing Fees

Standard Stripe fees (may vary by country):

  • Credit/Debit Cards - 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction
  • ACH Bank Transfers - 0.8% capped at $5
  • International Cards - Additional 1.5% for cross-border
  • Currency Conversion - 1% for multi-currency

How Fees Are Calculated

Example for a $100 invoice paid by credit card:

  • Transaction: $100.00
  • Stripe Fee: $3.20 (2.9% + $0.30)
  • You Receive: $96.80

When You Receive Funds

Stripe payout schedule:

  • Standard - 2 business days after payment
  • New Accounts - 7-14 days initially
  • Payout Schedule - Daily or weekly (configurable)

Viewing Fee Information

Track your payment fees:

  • Each payment shows the fee amount
  • Monthly fee summaries in reports
  • Stripe Dashboard for detailed breakdown

Passing Fees to Clients

Some businesses add a processing fee surcharge. If you choose to do this:

  • Check local laws regarding surcharges
  • Clearly disclose fees before payment
  • Consider including in your pricing instead

Reducing Fees

Ways to minimize processing costs:

  • Encourage ACH/bank transfers for larger invoices
  • Invoice larger amounts less frequently
  • Consider volume discounts from Stripe

Refund Fees

Important: When you issue a refund, Stripe returns the percentage fee but keeps the $0.30 fixed fee.
